Belief in the promised savior and the culture of Mahdism are among the most dynamic and hope-inspiring pillars of Shi‘i thought. Throughout history, they have served as driving forces for Muslim societies in resisting oppression and striving for human perfection. This study analyzes superstitions and spurious accretions within Mahdist culture and presents constructive strategies for addressing them. It employs a descriptive-analytical method based on library research. The central question is how to identify the conditions that give rise to superstition in the field of Mahdism without reducing the study of this culture to a purely negative diagnosis, and how to articulate a model of “Rational Awaiting.” The findings indicate that practices such as setting dates for the Mahdi’s advent (tawqīt), excessive preoccupation with encounters with the Imam, reducing Mahdism to rituals and individual actions, and following false claimants stem primarily from factors such as ignorance, the dominance of emotion over reason, misinterpretation of religious texts, and exploitation by self-interested individuals. As a constructive response to these harms, Rational Awaiting rests on rational engagement with Mahdist teachings, commitment to social responsibility, strengthening the social and governance-oriented dimensions of Islamic jurisprudence, and active participation in laying the groundwork for a new Islamic civilization. The findings further suggest that safeguarding Mahdist culture requires sustained critique of superstition, strengthening scholarly and religious authority, improving public literacy about Mahdism, and cultivating believers who await the Mahdi with rationality, responsibility, and a commitment to building society.
